IPTO considering energy storage investments for islands, mainland

Power grid operator IPTO is looking at investments in energy storage facilities, anticipating the gradual withdrawal of power utility PPC’s diesel-fired power stations on the Cyclades islands, once grid interconnection projects have completed, as well as a sharp increase in the development of RES systems expected on the mainland.

Besides their vital complementary role in the anticipated growth of RES systems, the installation of energy storage facilities would enable withdrawals of high-cost diesel-run power stations on islands.

Though most diesel-run power stations units will be withdrawn once grid interconnection projects have completed, units on Paros and Santorini are planned to be maintained as back-up for tourism-related electricity demand peaks during summer periods.

IPTO is considering the installation of energy storage systems on Naxos as well as on the mainland, according to the operator’s new ten-year development plan, forwarded yesterday for public consultation.
