Greece on Thursday repaid 186.3 million euros to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and avoided a new backlog of payments to the international institution amid negotiations for a third programme to support the economy.

“Greece has paid the interest charges due to the IMF today,” a spokesman of the fund said in an announcement.

The next payment of 306 million euros is due on September 1.
